Liverno: Marco Coltellini, 1763. First Edition. single sheet matted in rag board. A Fine original copperplate engraving. Folio (9.75 x 12.5 inches), matted in rag board.
A detailed engraved border surrounds this charmingly stylized scene by Violante Vanni (Italian 1732-76) of Bison in the landscape; complete with its food source- mouse hanging from a tree limb- appears to have been inspired by a written account opposed to the direct scientific observation of an astute field naturalist.
From the enlarged Italian edition of Il Gazzettiere Americano; an encyclopedia of the Americas; with an eye towards appealing to contemporary commerce and trade which included 57 engraved plates of America's native mammals and birds, as well as scenes of building and manufacture, commerce (of indigo, tobacco, sugar), birds eye views of towns and city plans of the Americas and Colonies. These engravings were not present in the smaller format edition published by J. Millar; London 1762. (Howes A 207, Sabin 1090, 26814). Fine. Item #7322
