Appleton studied at the Royal Academy of Arts, created a delicate illustration style influenced by William Heath Robinson, Arthur Rackham and Kate Greenway and is best known for her illustrations for Hans Christian Andersen's stories, William Blake's Songs of Innocence and The Children's Alice.
