Pl. 83 Moræa tricolor (Iris); Botanists' Repository for New and Rare Plants

Knightsbridge: Andrews, Henry C., 1797. First edition. Single sheet matted in rag board. Fine original hand-colored copperplate engraving. Quarto (8 x 10 3/8 inches). Matted in Rag board.

An elegant botanical print by Henry Charles Andrews (1770-1830). Larger in format than the rival publication of the time; Curtis' Botanical Magazine; London 1787- onward, The Botanists' Repository proved superior with new depictions of finely engraved plates produced and published entirely by Andrews. During this time it was extremely rare for an artist to personally engrave, hand-color and document every image in a given publication.

Preceded by his monograph; Coloured Engravings of Heaths, London 1794-1830, The Botanists' Repository was not Andrew's first botanical work, although it was his tour de force. Here Andrews illustrated his mastery as a flower painter and engraver/ colorist. Previously undocumented botanical specimens are rendered with an accuracy more aesthetic than scientific, in a large format which allows for finer botanical detail without forsaking the beauty of the composition.
