1842.
Folio (16.75 x 12 inches). Plate XV- The Fifeshire Breed. (Cow, 6 years old, the property of Mr. B. Feerney of Kilmux, bred by Mr. Anderson , Kiuglassie). A very rare original hand-colored lithograph by Fairland from a drawing by Mr. Nicholson, RSA (Member of the Royal Scottish Academy) after a painting by Mr. Sheils, RSA. Professor David Low (1786-1859), the professor of agriculture at the University of Edinburgh, created this work which documents the pure breeds of the British Isles, in an effort to educate both the landed country gentleman/ woman and common breeders alike. Unlike the many mid-19th C. animal portraits, which accentuate the 'useable portions of the beast' to glorify the breeder, Prof. Low's prized breeds were authentically and accurately rendered and thus credited to each owner/breeder. In addition, each breed is portrayed in a lovely pastoral, or mountainous landscaped setting. The appeal of this rare print in twofold, as well as a classic animal portrait, this print is appreciated as a fine 19th Century British landscape. (Wood 442, H. Buchanan, Nature into Art.)
