Antique Botanical Print from Icones Plantarum Medico-Oeconomico-Technologicarum...Pl. 476b. Delphinium Staphisagria.

Vietz, Ferdinand Bernhard .

Publisher Information:
Vietz, FB, Wein (Vienna): 1800-1822.

Original hand-colored copperplate engraving on laid-watermarked paper by Ignaz Albrecht. Quarto: 7 x 9.25 inches, 24cm x 18.5cm. Ferdinand Bernhard Vietz (1772-1815), Doctor of Healing Arts and Professor of Medicine at University of Vienna c.1805, produced a 10 volume compendium which documented the medicinal, culinary and decorative plants used by the Austrian Provincial Pharmacology during the early 19th Century. The plates were engraved, by noted cartographic engraver Ignaz Albrecht, who in addition completed the work upon the untimely death of Vietz. Realistic and subtle, the engravings are hand-colored in varying natural shades of ochre and green, not the blue-green wash of Hooker's Green commonly used to color most botanical prints from the turn of the 19th Century onward. The plant names are elegantly engraved in both Latin and German on each plate. (Sitwell's Great Flower Books. p.147)
